As India gets ready to tackle the Omicron variant of Covid-19, the country has reached an important milestone regarding vaccinations. According to Union Health Ministry, over 50 per cent of India's eligible population is fully vaccinated against Covid-19. After being in a dire situation during the first and second waves of Covid-19, India's vaccination drive has gathered momentum since it was launched on January 16, 2021. After the Maharashtra Government said that the state is running short of vaccines and remedisivir drugs, Mumbaikars from across the city thronged hospitals to get a jab. However, few centres were shut due to vaccine shortage while others started to run out of stock.

While the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown made 2020 a turbulent year, the announcement of the vaccination programme in 2021 brought a sigh of relief. Mumbai received the first consignment of Covishield vaccine made by Serum Institute of India (SII), Pune. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) received a total of 1,39,500 doses of the vaccine and is gearing up for the roll-out. The vaccines are being stored at a storage facility at the municipal office buildings in Parel.
