A special court in Gujarat on Friday pronounced the death sentence to 38 out of 49 convicts in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case.
11 others have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the court.
Earlier on February 8, a Gujarat court convicted 49 accused and acquitted 28 others in the 2008 Ahmedabad serial bomb blast case. Within a span of 70 minutes as many as 21 bomb blasts had taken place in Ahmedabad on July 26, 2008.

Highlights:

<li>As many as 20 bombs went off in different parts of the city on July 26, 2008, killing 56 persons besides leaving 246 others injured.</li>
<li>Bombs went off in Ahmedabad, at various spots including the state government-run civil hospital, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation-run LG Hospital, on buses, parked bicycles, in cars and other places,</li>
<li>The verdict was pronounced under section 302 (A) of IPC and Section 16 (1)(B) of the UAPA.</li>
<li>Special Judge AR Patel awarded a compensation of Rs 1 lakh to those who had died in the blasts.</li>
<li>A compensation of Rs 50,000 for victims with serious injuries and Rs 25,000 for those with minor ones.</li>
<li>
Usman Agarbattiwala has been additionally awarded a year of imprisonment for conviction under the Arms Act.

<li>
The court has imposed a fine of Rs 2.85 lakh each on 48 convicts.
</li>
<li>According to reports, it was alleged that Indian Mujahideen (IM) terrorists had planned and executed these blasts as a revenge for the 2002 riots in Gujarat.</li>
