A 22-year-old <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-109-students-fall-ill-at-school-in-thane-food-poisoning-suspected-23332785" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Thane plumber</a> died after he fell into a lift duct at a construction site in Maharashtra's Thane city, an official said on Friday, reported news agency PTI.
In a complaint filed at the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/thane-missing-toddler-found-dead-in-buildings-water-tank-in-bhiwandi-23332249" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Kapurbawdi police station</a>, a relative of victim Pradhyum Ashok Kumar said that he was working without any safety gear when the accident took place on January 30, reported PTI.
The Thane plumber sustained serious injuries after he lost his balance and plunged into a lift duct filled with water. He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, the official said citing the complaint, reported PTI.
The police on Thursday registered a case against the building contractor at the site under Indian Penal Code section 304A (causing death by negligence), said the station house officer of the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/maharashtra-man-from-thane-district-killed-by-unidentified-persons-after-quarrel-23331720" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">police station</a>, reported PTI.
In another case, a computer technician from Thane district in Maharashtra has become the latest victim of an online fraud wherein fraudsters lured him with the promise to earn quick money by rating some tasks and investing in bitcoins, a police official said on Wednesday, reported PTI.
The victim, a resident of <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-crime-news/article/thane-minor-girl-found-dead-in-derilict-kalyan-bldg-probe-underway-23331167" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Dombivali township</a>, lost Rs 17.33 lakh in the fraud from December 8, 2023, to January 9.
"The victim was approached with offers to earn big money through social media platforms. He was promised huge returns simply by rating certain online tasks and investing in bitcoins. The victim invested Rs 17.33 lakh over a month. He failed to receive any returns and his investment was also blocked," the official said, reported PTI.
The "online task fraud" typically involves trapping victims by making them perform tasks like liking videos etc. and making small payments initially to win their trust. The victims were later lured to invest money to earn big returns, reported PTI.
A case was registered under the Information Technology Act and further investigation is underway, the official added.
Meanwhile, a 27-year-old woman was arrested after the police busted a sex racket at a resort in Mira-Bhayander town of Maharashtra's Thane district, an official said on Friday, reported PTI.
The police's anti-human trafficking cell (AHTC) raided a resort in the Uttan area of Mira-Bhayander on January 29 and rescued three women in their 20s during the operation, senior inspector Sameer Ahirrao said, reported PTI.
