Maharashtra Medical Education Minister <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-assembly-session-ambadas-danves-suspension-a-one-sided-decision-and-pre-planned-conspiracy-says-uddhav-thackeray-23359592" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Hasan Mushrif</a> told the legislative assembly on Thursday that a new state-run medical college on the premises of Gokuldas Tejpal (GT) Hospital in south Mumbai will start from the academic year 2024-25, reported news agency PTI.
Hasan Mushrif said the new medical college will be affiliated with GT, and Cama and Albless hospitals, reported PTI.
The decision to start the new medical college was taken on January 31, 2012. The <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-assembly-passes-resolution-congratulating-indian-cricket-team-for-t20-world-cup-2024-win-23359505" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Indian Council of Medical Research</a> has given the permission to start the facility, he said, reported PTI.
The college will start with 50 students and the intake of students will be gradually increased, the minister said, reported PTI.
Meanwhile, an MNS leader on Wednesday said the <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/law-to-curb-paper-leaks-during-ongoing-maharashtra-assembly-monsoon-session-says-devendra-fadnavis-23359113" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra government</a> should not extend the benefit of its 'Ladki Bahin' scheme for women to communities where people have two wives, "especially" the Muslims, reported PTI.
Eligible women will be given Rs 1,500 per month under the state government's 'Mukhyamantri Majhi Ladki Bahin Yojana' announced last week in the annual budget.
Speaking to a Marathi news channel, <a href="https://www.mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-news/article/maharashtra-budget-2024-with-an-eye-on-assembly-polls-ajit-pawar-announces-waiver-of-electricity-bills-for-44-lakh-farmers-23358091" target="_blank" rel="none noopener">Maharashtra Navnirman Sena</a> (MNS) leader Prakash Mahajan criticised the scheme and said some of its aspects needed clarification, reported PTI.
"A community where people have two wives, two or more children, especially people from the Muslim community, should not be given benefit of this scheme," he added, reported PTI.
He also criticised the government's decision to relax conditions for the grant of domicile certificates.
"Lakhs of Bangladeshi people are staying in Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan, and they have ration cards, voter ID cards....is the government going to give benefits to the people who are not of this country?" Mahajan asked, reported PTI.
