The Maharashtra Anti-Corruption Bureau on Tuesday arrested two forest officials from Palghar district on the charge of demanding and accepting bribe to help a builder secure a land-related document, said an official. Navnath Jagtap, deputy superintendent of ACB-Palghar, said the duo had asked for Rs 10,000 and a bottle of alcohol to issue a no objection certificate, one of the documents needed to declare a plot as non-agricultural land. Acting on a complaint by the builder, the ACB laid a trap and arrested one of the forest officials as he accepted the liquor bottle, said the officials. ACB officials said citizens can reach the anti-graft body through its helpline -- 1064 -- to report bribe demands. (PTI)

Days after a controversy over Assam government's claims about the existence of 'Bhimashankar Jyotirling' in the north-eastern state, Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis said everyone is aware that the holy place is located in the western Indian state. "Everyone is aware that Bhimashankar Jyotirling is in Maharashtra and nobody has any doubts over this," Fadnavis told reporters on Tuesday. "If I were to give an advertisement tomorrow claiming that Kamakhya temple is in Maharashtra, will Kamakhya temple come to Maharashtra? It will stay where it is, at Guwahati," Fadnavis said. (PTI)

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) why an 'Enforcement Case Information Report' (ECIR) cannot be quashed if the original offence on which it is based has been closed. A division bench of Justices Revati Mohite Dere and Prithviraj Chavan was hearing a petition filed by Jet Airways founder Naresh Goyal and his wife Anita Goyal seeking the quashing of an alleged money laundering case registered against them by the ED. Generally an ECIR is registered on the basis of a criminal case registered by the police, CBI or any other agency. (PTI)

Maharashtra cabinet minister Deepak Kesarkar on Tuesday said the Eknath Shinde faction is not interested in taking over the Shiv Sena Bhavan in Mumbai or any other property linked to the rival camp headed by former CM Uddhav Thackeray, who he claimed, was trying to gain sympathy over the issue after an Election Commission ruling. Kesarkar, a spokesperson of the Sena faction led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, said his outfit is not even interested in laying claim to party funds after the EC recognised their group as the real Shiv Sena and allotted it the "bow and arrow" poll symbol. A woman with physical disabilities was killed by a speeding truck in Maharashtra's Thane district on Tuesday, a police official said. The 40-year-old victim was walking along a road when she was run over at Shivaji Chowk in Bhiwandi, said the official. She was later identified as Kavita, a local resident, said the official. Passersby caught hold of the truck driver and handed him over to the police, he said. (PTI)

At least 10 'galas' or stalls were destroyed in a fire in Maharashtra's Palghar district on Tuesday morning, an official said. No one was injured in the blaze around 4 am at Dhumal locality of Vasai, on the outskirts of Mumbai, the civic official said. Five men, who were fast asleep in one of the galas at the time, were saved by locals, he said. Wooden materials had been stocked in some of the units. Firefighters put out the blaze in three hours and started cooling operations, said the official, adding that the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. (PTI)

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said the state government has asked the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) to reconsider its decision to change the syllabus for its exams from this year. If the commission -- which holds competitive exams for government jobs -- did not reconsider, the government might move a court, he said. MPSC students are agitating against the commission's decision to introduce new syllabus from 2023. They want it deferred till 2025, stating that students are not prepared enough to tackle the new syllabus. "MPSC is an autonomous body, and the state government can not give a direction to it," Fadnavis said. (PTI)

Activist Gautam Navlakha, arrested in the Elgar Parishad-Maoist links case, had connections with a Pakistani ISI agent arrested in the US, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has told the Bombay High Court while opposing his bail application. The agency, in its affidavit filed in response to Navlakha's plea, also claimed that he had "committed acts that had a direct impact on the national security, unity and sovereignty." (PTI)

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Tuesday that he had been informed by former governor B S Koshyari that MVA leaders had written a letter with a threatening tone to the ex-governor over MLC nominations and refused to withdraw it. The deputy CM's remarks come a day after Koshyari defended his stand to sit on the nominations for 12 Members of the Legislative Council under the governor's quota when Uddhav Thackeray led the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state. Noted singer Sonu Nigam and his two colleagues were pushed allegedly by the son of an MLA during a scuffle over taking a selfie with the singer at a musical event in Mumbai, police said on Tuesday.
